EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
